What is the BHS?

From the Chairman: Welcome to the Bonaventure Historical Society (BHS) Blog.

This blog is part of our new forays into social media (beyond our Facebook page) to endure or seduce you into making a visit to Bonaventure a must-do as you plan future vacations. It is managed by one of our more talented volunteers, Leslie Alwiel.

Bonaventure Historical Society is a 21-year-old 501(c)3 tax-deductible organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah GA. Bonaventure Cemetery is a National Landmark cemetery. It was originally a private venture known as Evergreen Cemetery, located on some 70 acres of the original Bonaventure Plantation. In 1907, the City of Savannah acquired the property and renamed it Bonaventure Cemetery. It is now just over 100 acres and has over 35,000 interred in it.

BHS concentrates on the original cemetery area. We not only deal with abandoned graves that are of historic importance to the city, the state or the nation but also educate the public about those graves and our restoration efforts through guided tours, brochures, newsletters and by providing accurate information to film makers, writers and others producing stories about the site.
